Juniors, It’s Time To Start Thinking About Applying To College

College essays, or personal statements, are perhaps the most dreaded part about applying to colleges. They give you 500 words to tell them what they need to know about you. It’s your chance to shine, and it’s the place on the application where you have the most control in the moment (as opposed to a whole high school career’s worth of grades). So, how do you write something that will help complement your application and make you stand out from the pack? Here are some tips for the process.

I’ll talk about the first days covering Columbine, and what set me on the road to writing the definitive book on the shootings, Columbine: A True Crime Story (Ghost Road Press, 2009). I’ll also be talking about a couple of the exclusives in the book, and how I uncovered them. Sometimes it’s a question of good reporting or an innovative approach, such as obtaining the custom essay papers of killer Dylan Klebold.

Your opening should introduce your topic and supporting points, but most of all it should grab the reader’s attention and make them want to finish your essay.

While lounging by the pool or TV can be relaxing, they don’t lend themselves to the most compelling custom college essay essays. Plan to do something productive over the summer. Work, volunteer, play sports, or take a course at a college.

The essay body is usually three or four paragraphs based on your supporting points. Use the body to tell the story or stories that demonstrate your differences, passions and character. However, remember to be brief and precise don’t write for the sake of writing. Tell the story and be done.

But is it really the end or is it perhaps the middle of the story? Your story can end with how you turned your life around, how you re-routed yourself on a road map established early in your childhood which led you away from the best road to follow. Now you have a chance to take a new road, which is the best road, and lead a life in which you are the one in control.

These suggestions should give you the basis for a great essay. It’s not about how much time you spend on your writing, but instead about beginning early, planning a great argument and structure along with being effective with your time.
